Celebrate the Fall Flyway Festival – All September Long!

PictureEastern Bluebird, Atlanta, Georgia, by Kevin Lash/Audubon Photography Awards
This September, Birds Georgia invites you to celebrate the Fall Flyway Festival, a month-long series of in-person and virtual events highlighting the vital role native plants play in supporting birds and other wildlife. From hands-on workshops to expert-led talks, the festival is packed with opportunities to learn how gardening with native plants can help restore critical habitats right in your own backyard.

Habitat loss remains one of the biggest threats to Georgia’s bird populations. As urban areas expand and natural spaces shrink, native plants offer a powerful solution—providing essential food, shelter, and nesting sites. Thoughtful landscaping with native species can make a big impact, and this year's festival brings together leading partners including the Georgia Native Plant Society, Chattahoochee Nature Center, and Southeastern Grasslands Institute to share practical tools and inspiring ideas.

Events will take place throughout the month, so be sure to explore the full schedule below. Don’t miss the signature event, the Round Robin, happening September 13, at the Chattahoochee Nature Center!

Wilson called the “Southern Grassland Biome.” He’ll trace how these grasslands shaped America’s westward migration, how they've been altered over centuries, and why more than 95% have disappeared. Despite these losses, Dwayne will spotlight the hopeful work of the Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI) to restore these vital ecosystems across a 24-state region, offering lessons for conservation efforts nationwide.

Celebrating Birds on Private Land

Saturday, September 27
8:00 to 11:00 AM
Location: Oxford Family Farm
Cost: Free to attend

Did you know that Georgia is 93% privately owned? There is a diversity of wildlife that thrives on our private lands thanks to the stewardship efforts of our landowners. Join Birds Georgia and the Georgia Forestry Foundation for a morning of birding and learning at Oxford Family Farm in Culloden, a property listed on the Private Lands Birding Trail. We will explore the property to look for fall migrants and learn about what the landowners are doing to encourage birds - and other wildlife - on their land through habitat management. The property contains open pine forests, bottomland and upland hardwood forests, swamp, and numerous open, grassy fields, providing a diverse array of habitats. We will be walking roadways and trails. Please bring sturdy shoes, water, snacks, sunscreen, and binoculars.

Note for participants: This event is being filmed as part of a video that connects the bridge between private lands and birders. If you are not interested in being filmed, you can let staff know the morning of the event. If you are interested in being filmed, we are actively seeking a few participants to conduct short interviews on their experience birding on private lands and the concept of the Private Lands Birding Trail.
