Connecting Students with Stem through birds
Launched in 2016, Birds Georgia created Connecting Students with STEM through Birds with the goal of providing a comprehensive, school-year-long program for federally-designated Title I schools. The program addresses the needs of students, teachers, the school, and the local neighborhood.
Today’s youth will grow up to become tomorrow’s policy experts, decision makers, and community advocates. By creating a bird-friendly habitat at the school, Birds Georgia is providing a means for the students and the community to learn more about the natural world around them. As students and educators learn more about their local ecosystems and the issues affecting them, they naturally become better environmental stewards.
As part of the school-year-long program, participating schools receive field guides and environmental-themed children’s books for the library; a class set of binoculars; installation of a bird-friendly outdoor learning space; complete sets of our Learning About Birds curriculum; and teacher training on how to utilize the outdoor learning space, curriculum, and other resources. Additionally, Birds Georgia works with students and the community to install a native plant habitat and learning space on the school campus and conducts student programming throughout the school year.
To date, Birds Georgia has worked with fifteen schools through the Connecting Students with STEM through Birds Program, including Boyd Elementary, Carrollton Elementary, Chattahoochee Hills Charter School, Cleveland Academy, Continental Colony Elementary, Crawford Long Middle School, Emma Hutchinson Elementary, Fickett Elementary, Heritage Academy, Main Street Academy, McClendon Elementary, Sandhill Elementary, South Atlanta High School, Temple Elementary, Usher-Collier Elementary, and Westside Charter School.
Connecting Students with STEM through Birds is made possible with generous funding through the Morgens West Foundation, The Cohen Family Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation, and Birds Georgia members.
